Artist stumbles into a ‘Six Feet Under’ exhibit

Section: FLIPSIDE Kevin Humes considers himself a “mad scientist.” He concocts shimmering jewelry from glass, metal and stone. Recently, he stumbled upon some artwork from the hit HBO series “Six Feet Under.” In spring 2008, Humes, a Baltimore native, relocated to the area to live with his sister. At the time, he was unemployed and couldn’t afford repairs on his truck. Wandering down Main Street in Spring Grove one day, he spotted Artistic Glass Creations, walked inside and met Joshua Smith, the owner. Smith created the co-op to give local artists a venue for their work and access to his glass-blowing studio. It was a perfect match for Humes, who began working with dichroic glass — glass that contains multiple layers of metal elements — in 2002 and dreamed of opening a gallery. In the meantime, Humes was schlepping to the Glatfelter Memorial Library each day to use the computer to try and find work. He made friends with the librarians and when they had an opening for the May Artist of the Month gallery, they turned to Humes for help. He agreed to show his jewelry along with pieces by other Artistic Glass Creations artists, including Smith, Alexander Simms and Thomas Deneen. Librarian Ellen Helfrick complimented Humes on the display. When she mentioned her brother, David Meanix, stored the artwork he created for the HBO series “Six Feet Under” in her home, Humes was thrilled. Helfrick said her brother’s art was incorporated into the show’s sixth season and he even scored a small cameo. Since Humes watched every episode of the show, he volunteered to install the photosculpture exhibit. “Any gallery in the country would like to have (his work),” Humes said. It took a few months to negotiate the display with Meanix and HBO, but the exhibit will open Oct. 24 and runs through Nov. 14 at Glatfelter Library. Since the HBO series revolves around a family who runs a funeral home, there will be a special viewing from 5 to 7 p.m. on Halloween. And after dozens of e-mails and phone calls to regional galleries, Humes said the show might hit the road, too. But he hopes to help Spring Grove, first. One of the “Six Feet Under” prints will be auctioned with all proceeds benefiting the Glatfelter Library. Pieces from Artistic Glass Creations will also be on display and a portion of any sales will go to the library as well. “Now is the time we need (libraries) more than ever,” Humes said. He added that if library funding is cut, crucial community services, including the free Internet access he used, could be eliminated. Since Humes is back on his feet, he’s looking for even more opportunities to give back. In September, Artistic Glass Creations donated 12 items to the Help People Drink fundraiser in Hanover. The event raised $3,000 for Blood: Water Mission, an organization founded by Grammy Award-winning band Jars of Clay, which helps provide clean water to African villages. A few weeks ago, Humes was approached to design patriotic pins and pendants for the Nov. 12 groundbreaking of the Gold Star Healing and Peace Garden at Veterans Memorial Park in York. “I love the idea of local artists creating and doing things for (the ceremony),” said Gold Star Mother Cherriney Kondor. Humes said he was honored to be able to lend his “mad scientist” skills. “I want to get behind as many causes as I can,” he said.
